(Native American Civil War general); datelined "10th Nov. 1850 Sonora diggins California." Describes arriving at Sonora Diggins after a route of "about 3000 miles," via Los Angeles. Stand Watie, also known as Standhope, Oowatie, Degataga, and Isaac S. Watie, was a Cherokee Nation leader and brigadier general in the Confederate Army. He was born into the Cherokee Nation in Calhoun, Georgia, on December 12, 1806, and was educated at a Moravian mission school in Spring Place, Georgia.
